GeoTHERM 2026: Guest country Iceland and Citizens' Forum strengthen dialogue on the future of energy
Offenburg, 5 February 2026
• Strengthening its role as the world’s leading trade fair for geothermal energy
• Guest country: Iceland
• Citizens' forum for transparency and exchange
GeoTHERM 2026, the world's leading trade fair and congress for geothermal energy (26 + 27 February 2026), focuses on the importance of geothermal energy as a key technology for the energy transition. With Iceland as the guest country and an accompanying citizens' forum, the event offers both trade visitors and members of the public insights into the potential of geothermal energy.
Iceland: Natural geothermal expertise
Iceland is considered a global pioneer in the use of geothermal energy. Thanks to exceptional geological conditions, decades of experience and political support, the country covers a large part of its heating and electricity needs from using geothermal energy. High- and low-temperature resources are successfully used for power generation, district heating, industry and innovative applications.
As the guest country at GeoTHERM 2026, Iceland will showcase its extensive expertise, particularly in the areas of deep drilling technology, reservoir management and sustainable resource use.
A key partner in this endeavour is the GEORG Geothermal Research Cluster, a non-profit organisation based in Iceland. GEORG promotes research and development in the field of geothermal resources and brings together universities, research institutions, industry partners and public actors. The aim is to advance sustainable geothermal solutions and reduce dependence on fossil fuels worldwide. Icelandic exhibitors will also be presenting themselves in a joint exhibition area.
Geothermal Energy Citizens' Forum: Information and exchange
In addition to the international technical programme, GeoTHERM 2026 also focuses on transparency and dialogue with the public. On Friday, 27 February 2026, a free citizens' forum on geothermal energy will take place in the Oberrheinhalle, Room K1.
This offers interested parties the opportunity to exchange ideas with experts on areas of application, technical implementation and regional potential of near-surface and deep geothermal energy.
The event is being organised in collaboration with the State Research Centre for Geothermal Energy (LFZG), which has been coordinating geothermal energy research in Baden-Württemberg since 2009. The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a welcome address and moderation by Prof. Dr. Detlev Doherr.
This will be followed by an opportunity for discussion and and a question-and-answer sessio. At around 1 p.m., the citizens' forum will conclude with a free guided tour of the trade fair.
Participation is free of charge, but prior registration is required.
